Future of Science

How should the United States fund, organise and learn from its science?

FAS's work on metascience and open science: the evidence, and what we recommend the federal government does with it.

Design note. The one bold element in this direction: FAS's own publication record as the front page. Every mark is a real publication, by date and type; the list underneath is the same content for anyone who can't see the chart, and it updates itself when FAS publishes. The February 2024 column is six Day One memos published in two days.

What FAS recommends

In FAS's own words, from its policy memos.

All 16 publications and recommendations

Design note. Policy memos lead with what government should do, so this page does too: the memo's own first sentence, its title and date. Officials and their staff read the recommendation first and the evidence second.

FAS by the numbers

1,543 publications on fas.org since 2018, peaking at 268 in 2024. A featured-data block like this one takes a Datawrapper or Tableau link, or draws the chart natively with no third-party script, and always carries the numbers as a table.

Design note. RFP item A, featured data. Drawn in Public Sans to match the page, with FAS blue for the bars and a hatched bar for the year still running.

Follow the work

FAS's latest posts appear here from its own accounts, through a feed service that loads after the page does, so the page stays fast.

Design note. RFP item B, homepage feed. We don't reproduce FAS's posts in a concept, so this shows the links and where the feed sits.
